In my art and in my teaching, I continue to explore the nature of light as the medium of photography. I do so through studying the dimensions of modern digital image capture, the human vision system, the artistry of classical painting, and the technical demands of photographic printing. I then strive to synthesize these complex and often disparate elements of content into fresh, powerful photographic expressions of the beauty of light. These same concepts form the basis of my instructional method, enabling my students to develop their own unique artistic visions through the understanding and integration of art and technology.
For those of you who might not be aware, my wife, Nancy, and I are co-founders of the The Leesburg School of Photography, and I am the lead instructor for the School. I have been a still photographer, cinematographer, lecturer, and motion picture/television director and have received more than 30 national and international film awards. I have photographed and directed for Time-Life’s “Wild Wild World of Animals,”Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom,” the U.S. National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. My films have been distributed worldwide and on ABC, BBC, CBS, and PBS television networks. Nancy is an accomplished writer, photographer, and director in her own right.I was honored as an Alumnus of Notable Achievement by my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, for my work in photography, teaching, and image analysis breakthroughs involving early breast cancer detection within standard mammograms.
