The second annual Paddyfest celebration was held March 14 at the Eagles club in downtown Purcellville. Featured were Irish dancers of McGrath Academy for Irish Dance, and the DC rock band Icewagon FLU. This annual event celebrates Irish traditions, music, dance and food. Home made Corned Beef and Irish Soup were made available for dinner.
The event began at 5:30 and opened with the dancers who performed both soft and hard shoe styles of this traditional dance. The dancers represented a wide range of ages from eight to sixteen. We learned that the color and style of dance outfit represented their accomplishment in dance completions. The academy offers dance in several locations in the Loudoun area.
The dancers were followed by the DC band, Icewagon FLU. This band is best know for headlining the DC Shamrock Fest, and plays for enormous crowds. The band members proved their salt by belting out favorites from a wide range of decades. They had the crowd dancing all night long. We had several opportunities to speak with the band members. Considering their notoriety, we found them all to be intelligent, humble and quite humorous. Between songs they offered bits of humor and good old antics showing their passion and levity.
Regarding live music in Purcellville, this is about as good as it gets. Not to knock local bands, we hire them also, but these guys really shine. We’re quite hopeful that we’re able to have them back for Paddyfest 2016!
